![]() ![]() One issue with the Draka I don't think has been covered enough is how they get both sides of the villain/hero tropes. But I do feel like you're being a bit unfair to the story in some of your posts here. I dislike lots of things that I'm told are supposed to be very good. If you don't like the books that's perfectly fine of course. Think cultural relativism, anthropology etc.Īlien psychology leading to a truly Alien society and then exploring how they interact with humanity in various settings is one of the classical subjects of science fiction. Some of which are actually very applicable to real-life. ![]() One that is far from HFY itself and in fact, deals with some rather interesting subjects. Turtledove wanted to tell another kind of story. Does humanity effortlessly kick the race off the planet? Not at all. Is it a bit contrived to give humanity a chance? Absolutely. But I don't think Worldwar falls into that category at all. HFY is generally boring and its fans can be obnoxious, I agree with you on that. It's also a straight alternate-history scenario looking at how the presence of Aliens, specifically an Alien invasion we could fight, unlikely as that might be, would have impacted world history peppered with a lot of politics and diplomacy and some mil-sci-fi. The Worldwar books, on the other hand, are simultaneously an exploration of how Alien psychology might lead to very different societal development and ways to view the world and how the way we developed and think about progress might not only not be the norm but even the rare exception. Don't get too arrogant, there might be a bigger fish just ahead. Sort of a humbling reminder that we're really only a tiny few steps ahead of those we might be tempted to consider primitive as compared to the kind of advanced technology that may well be possible. ![]() Both in that it holds up a mirror to the things humans have been doing to each other throughout history (the title should be a not-too-subtle hint here) and in that it delivers the message that if someone came around to our little planet who just happened to have existed for longer than we have we'd most likely have no realistic hope of fighting them. Vilcabamba I would somewhat compare to War Of The Worlds. I feel like those are two very distinct types of story though. ![]()
